Best foods to eat and foods to avoid

Hello-

Today, I wanted to share some foods to eat and some foods to avoid.

One of the biggest foods to avoid is sugar for many reasons.   Sugars are known to cause weight gain. You should avoid these products, and using alternatives like sugar substitutes and water can be useful. Sugar is known to be one of the most common foods in terms of weight gain. You should avoid sugar and use other things instead like honey or Splenda.

Fats and sugars make a person crave more and more while providing energy that is not sustainable in the long run.  Complex carbohydrates can give a person long-term energy without feeling sluggish, tired and hungry.

Eating a variety of foods helps ensure that you get the nutrients your body needs every day.  Following MyPyramid.gov can help you create a balanced, healthy diet by giving you suggestions for the types and amounts you should have from all food groups each day.  Eating a variety of grains, especially whole grains, as well as a variety of fruits and vegetables daily is important.  When choosing your diet, make sure it is low in saturated fats and cholesterol, also moderate in total fat.

The best advice is to focus on eating less and making healthy food choices. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables (5 to 9 servings a day), dried beans, and whole grains.

Health benefits of ginger root

Discover the major health benefits of Ginger root

Ginger has long been known for its healing properties as well as its good taste, and practitioners of Chinese, Japanese and Indian medicine have long known of its value.

One of the most significant benefits of ginger seems to be its ability to reduce nausea, and ginger is being studied as a possible way to avoid the nausea and vomiting often associated with chemotherapy treatment.

Ginger is also thought to have a profound effect on the circulation, and it is felt that it has an important role to play in reducing the incidence of heart disease.  Scientists are not yet certain whether these benefits are derived from increased circulation or some other, as yet unknown, mechanism.

Another important benefit of ginger may be its ability to prevent and treat motion sickness, and many frequent travelers swear by the effectiveness of ginger for this purpose.  Taking a small amount of ginger prior to travel has proven remarkably effective for many people.

In addition, the ant nausea effects of ginger may offer a natural way to treat the morning sickness and nausea that can accompany pregnancy.  Ginger is currently being studied for its effectiveness as an anti morning sickness treatment, and many women swear by the power of ginger in the diet to reduce the uncomfortable effects of pregnancy.

In addition, ginger is thought to have strong anti-inflammatory effects, due to the presence of powerful anti-inflammatory compounds known as gingerols. The presence of these gingersols is thought to explain why so many of those who suffer from osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis enjoy a reduction in their levels of pain as well as an increase in mobility when they eat ginger frequently.

In addition to these important benefits, ginger is even thought to play an important role in the prevention of colorectal cancer.  Again the gingerols contained in this spice are thought to be responsible for its protective impact.  These gingerols are the same compounds responsible for giving ginger its distinctive flavor and aroma, and these same compounds may be able to inhibit the growth of colorectal cancer cells.  This anticancer benefit of ginger is the subject of much ongoing study, and it may be one of the most important roles of this superfood.

As with other valuable superfoods, ginger is also thought to provide a boost to the immune system.   A strong and vibrant immune system is essential to good health, and ginger is thought to have the ability to boost the effectiveness of the immune system.

This may be one of the reasons that ginger has traditionally been used at the first sign of a cold or the first symptoms of the flu.  It is thought that the warming and flushing action of ginger help to promote healthy sweating, which can be important to fighting off the effects of colds and flu.  In addition, it is thought that the flushing and sweating associated with consumption of ginger may speed the detoxification process, thus providing a boost to the immune system and a shorter duration of colds, flu and other common infections.

Health benefits of Valerian Root

The soothing power of valerian root

For many centuries, the perennial herb known as valerian root has been used to treat insomnia.  Even today, with so many prescription and over the counter sleep medications on the market, valerian root continues to enjoy a remarkable popularity.  Valerian root certainly has a number of important benefits over other popular sleep medications.  For instance, it is mild and not addictive and it is effective not only as an insomnia medication but as a treatment for anxiety and stress as well.

What is valerian root?

The plant known as the valerian root grows wild in many places around the world, including North America, Asia and Europe.  It is the underground stems and roots of the plant that are dried and made into the herbal preparation known as valerian root.

There has been a bit of controversy over just what makes valerian root so effective as a sedative, but there is little doubt as to its effectiveness.  In addition to promoting healthful and sound sleep, valerian root has long enjoyed a reputation for reducing anxiety and for reducing tension by relaxing tight muscles.  In addition, Valerian root may play a role in relieving certain digestive problems, including such common ailments as irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis.

Forms of valerian root

In addition to being taken orally in the form of capsules or tablets made from dried herb, valerian root is often added to hot water to form a strong herbal tea or used as an essential oil.  It is thought to have a calming effect in all of these preparations.

Valerian root has proven remarkably effective at treating anxiety and restlessness, and valerian root has even shown promise at treating panic attacks.  Research is ongoing into the effectiveness of this herb against this serious condition.

In addition to its calming effects on the mind, valerian root may exhibit the same calming effects on the digestive system.  Anecdotal evidence suggests that valerian root may be effective against common digestive problems, including many brought on by stress

Many people feel that the freeze dried extract of valerian root is the most effective form, and like all herbs how the valerian root is handled after harvest matters a great deal.  If the herb is mishandled, or the equipment used to process it is of substandard quality, much of the therapeutic value of the herb can be lost.  For this reason, it is important to buy valerian root only from high quality, established companies to ensure the best and most effective supplement.

What to look for when buying Valerian Root

Valerian root is sold both as an individual herbal supplement and as part of herbal preparations which combine many different herbs.  When buying a combined preparation with several different herbs it is important to ensure that the preparation contains a high enough concentration of valerian root to be effective against insomnia and other conditions.  If a high enough concentration is not available it may be best to purchase the herb separately.

Valerian root may be one of those times when the natural approach is the best.  Everyone needs to get a good night’s sleep, and new scientific studies, combined with thousands of years of safe and effective use, suggest that valerian root may be one of the best ways to treat insomnia and related conditions.
